June 24, 2002--For the second year in a row, Maria Daniil, a graduate student from Athens, Greece, has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Magnetic Materials Producers Association.
The first woman to ever receive this grant, Daniil will be honored at the Rare Earth Magnets XVII workshop dinner in August at the Hotel du Pont.
The award is given to applicants who show strong interest in magnetics or magnetic materials. Daniil is working in the field of high performance Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets, which are used in everything from computers to car motors. Her research focuses on substituting carbon for boron to obtain a nanocomposite magnet with improved properties.
Her adviser is George Hadjipanayis, Richard B. Murray Professor of Physics.
