Former Hens compete in lacrosse world championship

July 16, 2002--Two former University of Delaware men's lacrosse standouts, Kevin Lavey and John Grant Jr., were on opposite sides as the United States defeated Canada 18-15 for the International Lacrosse Federation world championship on Sunday, July 14, in Perth, Australia.

The USA trailed 9-7 at the half but stormed back for the victory, its sixth consecutive ILF title since losing to Canada in the 1978 title game.

In the championship game, Lavey scored two goals for the USA, and Grant scored four for Canada.

Both Lavey and Grant figure prominently in the UD lacrosse record book. Lavey is second in career goals, with 153, and Grant is tied for sixth in career goals, with 117.

Lavey is tied for third in most games played as a Blue Hen, with 61, and holds the record for most goals in a season by a freshman, with 38 in 1996.

Grant holds the record for most assists in a season, with 54 in 1999, and the record for points per game in a career, averaging 5.53 in 1998-99. Also, he scored eight goals in a game against Rutgers in 1998, tied for fifth on the all-time list.

USA advanced to the final by defeating the Iroquois Nationals 18-8, and Canada advanced by defeating host Australia 15-14.
