Broadway Kids open Family Series Dec. 9

The University of Delaware’s Family Performing Arts Series will open its 2001-02 season with two performances by The Broadway Kids, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9. A limited number of tickets are still available for the 2 p.m. performance and more are available for the earlier show. Both performances will be held in Mitchell Hall, South College Avenue, Newark. A special buffet lunch will be offered prior to the show at the Blue & Gold Club on Kent Way.

A group of child stars from Broadway, television, films and movies, The Broadway Kids range in age from 8-15. Their hour-long show, which can trace its roots to an off-Broadway production at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre on 42nd Street, gives the audience a sampling of songs from 13 musicals, including “Oliver,” “Annie,” “Pippin,” “The Sound of Music” and “Ragtime.”

New York ophthalmologist Julius Shulman formed “The Broadway Kids” in 1994 after his 10-year-old son was cast as Gavroche in “Les Miserables.” Shulman said he began the group as a way for parents to introduce their children to the world of Broadway theatre.

Directed by Christopher Scott, the Kids boast such alumni as Lacy Chabert, who went on to star in FOX-TV’s “Party Of Five,” Katherine Zaremba, who starred in NBC-TV’s “The Jeff Foxworthy Show” and Eden Riegel, who was seen in the recurring role of Megan Cooper on FOX-TV’s “NY Undercover” and also heard in the animated DreamWorks film “Prince of Egypt.”

The Kids have appeared on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” and “Live With Regis and Kathie Lee,” and recorded five albums. The ensemble also performed at the 1997 Presidential Easter Egg Roll at the White House and the 1998 NBA All-Star game at Madison Square Garden.

Tickets are $10 for the general public; $8 for faculty, staff, alumni and seniors; and $6 for students and children and may be purchased by calling the Hartshorn Hall Box Office at (302) 831-2204 or by visiting the Box Office at the corner of Academy Street and Park Place in Newark. Box Office hours are noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The buffet luncheon at the Blue & Gold Club begins at 12:30 p.m., and features Broadway Bolognese Spaghetti, Famous Fried Chicken, and an All-You-Can-Eat Brownie Sundae Bar Cost is $12.50 for adults and $6.50 for children ages 5 to 11, gratuity included.
