Tortorelli, Shuck make IWLCA All-Region team

May 23, 2002--Two University of Delaware senior women's lacrosse players have been named to the 2002 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association NCAA Division I All-Mid Atlantic Region team.

Senior goalkeeper Laurie Tortorelli was named to the first team for the third straight season while senior midfielder Corinne Shuck was selected to the second team. A total of 32 players from 11 different schools were honored. National champion Princeton placed five players on the first team to lead the way.

Tortorelli earned first team IWLCA All-Region honors for the third straight season and is now eligible for the national All-American ballot. She was a four-year starting goalkeeper for the Blue Hens and led the team to the 1999 America East title and to the 2000 NCAA Tournament.

A team co-captain as a senior and an honors student as an exercise and sports science major, she posted a 10.81 goals allowed average and a .561 save percentage to rank among the CAA leaders during the 2002 season. She started all but three games in her career and allowed 9.35 goals per game while posting a .560 save percentage. Her 754 career saves rank second all-time in UD history.

Shuck earned second team honors after earning second team All-Colonial Athletic Association laurels earlier this month.

A four-year letterwinner and a two-time all-conference performer, Shuck started all 16 games and led the team in goals (35), assists (9), points (44), and shots on goal (89) while also collecting 18 groundballs and forcing seven turnovers. She finished her career with 78 goals and 21 assists, falling just one point shy of becoming just the 23rd player in UD history to reach 100 career points.

She scored two or more goals in 13 of the 16 games this past season, including a career-high six goals in a mid-season loss to 20th ranked Ohio State.

Delaware posted a record of 4-12 this past season under head coach Denise Wescott. Six of the losses were by two goals or less and two others were by four goals.

The IWLCA first team included: Noelle Cebron (Temple), Charlotte Kenworthy (Princeton), Megan Mirick (Ohio State), Colleen O'Hara (Penn State), Lauren Simone (Princeton) and Jami Wilus (LaSalle), attack; Crissy Book (Penn), Danielle Shearer (Notre Dame), Theresa Sherry (Princeton) and Shannon Wilson (Ohio State), midfield; Rachel Becker (Princeton), Kristin Checksfield (Rutgers), Ali DeCecco (Penn State), Kathyrn Lam (Notre Dame) and Brooke Owens (Princeton), defense; and Tortorelli in goal.

The second team consisted of: Tracey Bounds (Ohio State), Katie Jeschke (Penn State), Heather McClelland (Lafayette) and Patience Synnestvedt (Temple), attack; Mimi Hammerburg (Princeton), Lindsey Hart (Ohio University), Robin Keevan (Temple), Natalie Loftus (Notre Dame), Regina Oliver (Ohio State), Stephanie Tinney (Lafayette) and Shuck, midfield; Christy Bennett (Penn), Susan Duccilli (Rutgers), Tina Fedarcyk (Notre Dame) and Shelly Wosczyna (Temple), defense; and Lauren Gulotta (Rutgers), goalkeeper.
