June 19, 2002--Nine faculty members are the first to receive the new International Research Awards totaling $50,000 for 2002-2003, established by the Office of the Provost and the Center for International Studies (CFIS).
The recipients and their projects include:
April Veness, associate professor of geography, $10,000 for “The Pilot Study of Guatemala/Delaware Migrations and How They Are (Re)defining Home Places and Directing Decisions about Permanent Residency in the US versus Guatemala”;
Jean Pfaelzer, professor of English, $7,000 for “The Role of the Government of China in Resisting Violence Against Chinese Immigrants in California in Rural Towns in the Late 19th Century”;
Robert Carroll, professor; Thomas Evans, associate professor, with Mohamed Sedegui, visiting scientist, all in plant and soil sciences, $8,500 for “Development of a Seed Potato Certification Program for the Middle East”;
Charles Link, professor of economics, and Panos Kanavos, professor of economics at the London School of Economics, Athens National University, $8,000 for “Quality of Care Issues in the Uptake and Use of New Pharmaceutical Treatments in the United States and the United Kingdom”;
George Bear, professor of education, $9,900 for his project “Development of Responsible Behavior: Differences Between American and Japanese Students and Schools”; and
Jinfa Cai, associate professor of mathematical sciences, $6,600 for “What is Effective Teaching: East Meets West in the Mathematics Classroom.”
A faculty committee chaired by David Pong, professor of history, evaluated the proposals and recommended the award winners to the Office of the Provost. Serving on the committee were David Black, associate professor of economics; Lois Potter, Ned B. Allen Professor of English; Tsu-Wei Chou, Jerzy L. Nowinski Professor of Mechanical Engineering; Lesa Griffiths, director of the Center for International Studies; and Bahram Rajaee, director of international projects in the Center for International Studies. The International Research Award program is part of the University’s ongoing America and the Global Community initiative.
