Dec. 17, 2002Gretchen Cummins Hupfel, MFA/AS 93, an assistant professor and foundation coordinator at the University of Georgia in Athens, died Dec. 14 in Atlanta. She was 39.
A native of Wilmington, Hupfel attended Tower Hill School and received her bachelors degree magna cum laude, from Brown University. A highly respected artist, she received many awards and distinctions, including a 1992 University of Delaware fellowship and a 1993 Competitive Tuition Scholarship at UD.
Her work is in the permanent collections of the Delaware Art Museum, the High Museum in Atlanta, American Century Corp., Citibank, Sprint, Phillip Morris and many private collections.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Lower Brandywine Church, 101 Old Kennett Pike and Route 52, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to The Mad Housers, 449 Moreland Ave., Suite 002, Atlanta, GA 30318, an Atlanta-based nonprofit corporation that provides shelter for the homeless; the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, 535 Means St, Atlanta, GA 30318; or the National Alliance of the Mentally Ill, Delawares Family-to-Family Program, 2500 West 4th St., Suite 5, Wilmington, DE 19805.
