July 24, 2002--University of Delaware men's basketball head coach David Henderson announced Tuesday, July 23, that fifth-year senior guard Vohn Hunter has been declared academically ineligible for the 2002-03 academic year.
Despite attending summer classes, Hunter has failed to meet the necessary requirements to make him eligible to compete at an NCAA institution. The 6-4 native of Bronx, N.Y., could possibly use his final year of athletic eligibility at an NAIA institution.
"We have exhausted every avenue with Vohn and feel it is time that we part ways," Henderson, who is on a recruiting trip, said. "I tried to give him every opportunity to get a college education. We were willing to let him go to summer classes and get him his eligibility for the second semester. However, Vohn failed to attain the grades necessary to achieve that."
Hunter appeared in 23 games with 15 starts last year, his first as a Blue Hen after transferring from Lake Champlain Community College in Burlington, Vt.
Hampered by his recovery from calf surgery during most of the season, Hunter averaged 9.2 points per game, fourth best on the squad, and 2.7 rebounds per game as Delaware finished 14-16 and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.
