2:25 p.m., Nov. 7, 2002--More than 100 UD employees, students, alumni and friends who walked on behalf of the University at the American Heart Walk helped UD to achieve its highest rank eversixth out of 50 Delaware company sponsorsin the amount of money raised to fight heart disease, the nations leading cause of death. The University raised $12,736 for the American Heart Association (AHA) at the walk, which was held at the Riverfront Walkway in Wilmington on Sunday, Sept. 15.
UD has landed consistently in the top 10 Delaware companies for AHA since its participation in the event began in 1998, but this years total was the largest amount the University has raised so far.
According to Wellness Center Director Marianne Carter, UDs involvement in the Heart Walk began as an effort within the College of Health and Nursing Sciences, but has evolved into a University-wide event.
This is truly a grass-roots effort, Carter said, and we are very appreciative of all of the folks who raised money and gave up their Sunday morning to participate on behalf of UD.
The UD walkers were organized into teams, each presided over by a Heart Walk Captain who voluntarily took responsibility for registering team members. Team captains were Mary Beth Miele, associate professor of medical technology; Randee Tobin, secretary, health and nursing science; Linda Smith, program coordinator, health and nursing science; Sharon Turner, administrative assistant, Office of the Executive Vice President; Melissa Fulgham, medical services representative, physical therapy; Kathy Roth, senior secretary, Morris Library; and Kristine Flowers, a junior in the College of Arts and Science and Carter.
Several UD walkers are members of the AHA $500 club, which means they raised $500 or more as an individualCarter, Randee Tobin, UD alumni Matt Frawley and Jennette Driscoll, a student in the Division of Professional and Continuing Studies, were among them. Tobin also received a free dinner for two at the Blue and Gold Club for raising the most money ($920) of any UD walker.
The first 100 UD walkers to raise $50 or more received a YoUDee Heart Walk T-shirt that was designed with the help of Connee McKinney, editorial coordinator in publications. The colorful lime green shirts ensured that UD stood out on the 3-mile course along the Christina River.
An after-walk event featured food, music and health screenings and provided family fun, rewarding the walkers for their contribution to an important cause.
