Pennsylvania point guard signs with Blue Hens

11:35 a.m., Nov. 14, 2002--University of Delaware women's basketball head coach Tina Martin announced Wednesday, Nov. 13, that Liz Hayes of Easton (Pa.) Area High School has signed a National Letter of Intent a to play for the Blue Hens next season.

Hayes, a 5-foot 7-inch point guard, enters her senior season at Easton Area High with 1,451 career points. As a junior, she broke the school's career scoring record, a mark that was nearly 40 years old.

The native of Forks Township, Pa., led the Lehigh Valley in scoring with 21.8 points per game, which was a single-season school record, and also broke school single-season records for points (566) and three-point field goals (45). She scored a career-high 36 points last December against Stroudsburg High School and followed that up with a 30-point game the next night against Voorhees.

Last season, Hayes was an Easton Express-Times first-team all-area honoree, Associated Press third-team all-state selection and the Mountain Valley Conference's most valuable player. She also was named an honorable mention All-East selection by Street and Smith Magazine this season.

“We're excited about Liz's commitment to our program,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “She is an outstanding addition to our backcourt. She shoots the three-point shot very well and has a great understanding of the game. She will make an immediate impact on our program next season.”

UD is coming off of three-straight 20-win seasons and its first-ever NCAA (2001) and WNIT (2002) appearances. The Fightin' Blue Hens open the 2002-03 season Friday, Nov. 22, at the University of Richmond.
