UD jury expert to appear on A&E

July 24, 2002--Valerie Hans, UD professor of criminal justice and psychology, will appear on an Arts and Entertainment Network two-hour special, entitled “We, The Jury,” airing from 9-11 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7. A&E is broadcast locally on Comcast channel 24.

The special was produced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of American Justice, an award-winning program created for A&E.

A&E is examining the jury system as a way to highlight the program’s anniversary because polls show that Americans consistently list trial by jury as one of this country’s most important institutions. Yet, during the last 10 years, the jury’s impartiality and judgment have come under attack as never before.

“We, The Jury” will take viewers into the hearts and minds of jurors on some of the most controversial and challenging criminal trials in the last decade, including the O.J. Simpson trial; the trial of Joel Steinberg, an attorney convicted of beating his daughter to death; and the trial of two black men convicted of beating truck driver Reginald Denny shortly after the policemen who beat Rodney King were acquitted.

Hans, author of “Judging the Jury” and a nationally known expert on jury behavior, was interviewed for four hours on the psychology of jurors.
