Grad student has solo art show

“Comma,” a solo exhibit by UD master of fine arts student Emanuela Harris-Sintamarian, opens with a reception from 7-9 p.m., Friday, April 5, at the Newark Arts Alliance’s Art House, located at 132 East Delaware Avenue, Newark, showcasing the Romanian artist’s eclectic mixture of silkscreen, linoleum cut prints, ink drawings and paintings.

Harris-Sintamarian, an accomplished artist who has shown her work in exhibits in France, Italy, Germany and her native Romania, came to the University of Delaware in 2000, intrigued by the opportunity “to see what happens in another educational system.”

She became interested in studying in the U.S. after a 1999 student exchange program in which she worked with Native American children on a reservation in South Dakota. Encouraged by art department chairperson Martha Carothers, Harris-Sintamarian applied to the MFA program at UD and received a full tuition scholarship.

“My work has changed a lot since coming to the U.S,” she said. “It has changed from representative to much freer and non-representative lately.”

The show at the Art House came about through a competition last year in which Harris-Sintamarian submitted her work and was chosen to present a solo exhibit. She says she has received a lot of support from the Arts Alliance while preparing for the show, and that this exhibit will present a combination of old and new work that she has completed over the past year.

In addition to the solo show at the Art House, Harris-Sintamarian also is participating in several group exhibits this year, including “A New Generation” at the Rosenfeld Gallery in Philadelphia and “Emerging Artists” at New York’s Limner Gallery.

“Comma” will be on display at the Art House until April 20. Hours are noon-4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, and 1-4 p.m., Sunday.
