More than 75 students in grades 4-8 representing public, private and parochial schools throughout the state visited the University of Delaware campus on Friday, April 5, to participate in the 14th annual Delaware Geography Bee.
The state Geography Bee is the second level of the National Geographic Bee. Students who competed Friday had to win their school geography bees and pass a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society.
Sean ODonnell, a seventh-grade student at Corpus Christi School, won the state competition in a tiebreaker. The runner-up was Christopher Bard of Sanford School. ODonnell will compete in the National Geographic Bee, which will be held May 21-22 in Washington, D.C.
Each year, thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.
The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject and increase public awareness about geography.
