UD field hockey team picked to finish fourth

Aug. 22, 2002--The University of Delaware field hockey team is picked to finish fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association, according to a poll of the conference’s eight head coaches.

Old Dominion, which is picked to capture its seventh consecutive CAA championship, received seven first-place votes for a maximum possible total of 49 points.

William & Mary claimed second place with a total of 38 points, edging last year's runner-up James Madison, with 35 points. The Blue Hens received the other first-place vote in the poll and 34 points.

Drexel placed fifth with 27 points, while Hofstra, Virginia Commonwealth and Towson complete the final three spots.

This will be UD’s first season of field hockey in CAA. The Hens finished 13-8 last year, 6-3 in the America East Conference.

Delaware finished in the top four of the conference every season from 1996-2001. Key returnees include senior Kelly Coyle (3 goals, 9 assists) and sophomore Leah Geib (10 goals, 4 assists), who were both named to the All-America East second team in 2001.

The Blue Hens open the 2002 campaign at home against West Chester at noon, Saturday, Aug. 31.
