July 19, 2002--The University of Delawares Farm and Home Field Day, usually held the second Wednesday in August at the Research and Education Center (REC) in Georgetown, has been canceled this year because of an avian influenza outbreak in the poultry industry of Virginias Shenandoah Valley.
An annual event for more than 50 years, Farm and Home Field Day includes crop field tours, interactive exhibits and informational demonstrations related to agriculture and natural resources. Typically, the event draws more than 1,000 visitors.
While we have had no incidence of this highly contagious poultry disease in Delaware, we are being prudent, Mark Isaacs, director of the REC, said. Robin Morgan, dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and I discussed the cancellation of Farm and Home Field Day with department chairs. The consensus was to take no risks and act responsibly.
Isaacs said that the Sussex County Safe Kids Day, which each year is held in conjunction with Farm and Home Field Day, will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 14, as planned.
The educational safety program will be held on the Owens campus of the Delaware Technical and Community College near Georgetown. For more information on this event, call UD Cooperative Extension safety specialist Ron Jester at 302-856-7303.
