Julie Van Deusen

University of Delaware junior diver Julie Van Deusen has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Diver of the Year by a vote of the CAA member head coaches.

Van Deusen, a junior from Bear, Del., and a first-year transfer from Syracuse, was also named to the CAA All-Conference team for her performance at the CAA championships Feb. 21-24 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. She was the only member of the UD men’s or Women’s team honored.

Other women’s award winners were George Mason’s Lauren Stinnett (Swimmer of the Year), Towson’s Jennifer Irby (Rookie Swimmer of the Year) and George Mason’s Mary Campioli (Rookie Diver of the Year). GMU women’s coach George Ward was named Coach of the Year.

Men’s award winners were UNC Wilmington’s Dan Gallagher (Swimmer of the Year), Drexel’s Kevin Coogan (Diver of the Year), UNC Wilmington’s Warren Lockie (Rookie Swimmer of the Year) and Davidson’s Chris Wrobleski (Rookie Diver of the Year). UNC Wilmington men’s coach Dave Allen was named men’s Coach of the Year.

Van Deusen became Delaware’s first ever CAA champion as she captured the one-meter diving competition while also placing second in the three-meter event. She later went on to become Delaware’s first ever NCAA championship qualifier in swimming and diving as she placed 32nd in the one-meter event and 35th in the three-meter event at the University of Texas.

UNC Wilmington’s Gallagher highlighted the teams as he won four titles at the CAA meet to lead the Seahawks to their first men&Mac226;s team title. He moved on to place fourth in the 50-meter freestyle at the NCAA championships.

Stinnett was named the women’s Swimmer of the Year after winning five events and leading George Mason to its first women’s team title. She also placed fourth in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA championships.
