In Memoriam
Anna Lee DeHaven
Betty Paulanka, dean of the College of Health and Nursing Sciences, delivered the following memorial tribute to Dr. Anna Lee DeHaven at the General Faculty meeting April 7, 2003.

Dr. Anna Lee DeHaven came to the University of Delaware’s College of Nursing in 1969 and retired in 1990. She spent 21 years developing and teaching throughout the medical-surgical programs within the college and was named professor emerita. Dr. DeHaven became a doctorally prepared nurse when this resource was scarce; her detailed nature led her to the operating room and microbiology for specialization. She pursued her medical-surgical nursing talents into education for critical care nurses with an emphasis on cardiovascular specialties. Dr. DeHaven understood the worth of maintaining one’s skills as it related to clinical scholarship.

Dr. DeHaven worked tirelessly on many programs for student and faculty welfare initiatives. She was an effective and supportive educator. She loved teaching and student development in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. She “willingly absorbed herself” in matters central to nursing education. Her colleagues recall a quiet and polite faculty team member who mentored many new faculty within the Department of Nursing; her hobbies included reading and music.

Although Dr. DeHaven was quiet by nature, her impact on the M.S. in nursing program was profound in developing and mentoring many nurses through their education at the University of Delaware. Her legacy of student development remains a central mission within the department today, and her students have provided leadership throughout the state and the nation in the area of medical surgical nursing.

Anna Lee DeHaven, 77, professor emerita of nursing at the University of Delaware, died April 5, 2002. In the then-College of Nursing, she was coordinator of medical-surgical nursing.
