Seven CTE Instructional Improvements Grants announced
 

June 24, 2002--The Center for Teaching Effectiveness (CTE) has awarded seven instructional improvement grants for Spring 2002 to promote teaching and learning that advances UD’s teaching mission and gives greater visibility to innovation in higher education.

The focus for the current round of awards is using advanced and emerging technologies in instructional contexts.

CTE instructional improvement grants, totaling $109,437, have been awarded to

James Hoffman, professor of psychology, and John Whalen, associate professor of psychology, for “Watch the Brain in Action: High-density ERP Recording as an Arena for Learning about Cognitive Neuroscience”;

Carmine Balascio, associate professor of biosciences engineering, for “Use of CAPA, an Asynchronous Learning Network (ALN) Tool for Homework Problem Assignments in Engineering Technology Courses”

Rebecca Worley, assistant professor of English, and Deborah Andrews, professor of English, for “Writing, Structuring and Designing Information for Screen Display Using Web Development Tools”;

James Raths, professor in the School of Education, for “Electronic Portfolios as a Vehicle for Student Growth”;

Charlene Hamilton, associate professor of nutrition and dietetics, and Larry Purnell, professor of nursing, for “Using Palm Pilots to Enhance Student Learning in Telehealth”;

Adam Marsh, assistant professor of marine biology and biochemistry, and Brian Bahnson, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, for “3D Visualization for Macromolecules for Effective Instruction of Protein Structure/Function and Biochemical Evolution,” and

Belinda Orzada, assistant professor, and Janet Hethorn, associate professor, both consumer studies, for “Image Search by Image Content: Exploring Visual Style in Historic and Ethnic Collections.”

Members of the faculty review committee, chaired by William Frawley, director of the Office of Undergraduate Studies, included 2001 grant recipients Ian Hall, associate professor of mechanical engineering, Christine Kydd, associate professor in business administration, Raymond Nichols, professor of art; and Leila Lyons, director and Kathleen Troutman, associate director, both in Informational Technologies—User Services; and Gabriele Bauer, teaching consultant in the Center for Teaching Effectiveness.
