Colonial Fair part of Cooch's Bridge celebration

June 20, 2002--The University of Delaware and downtown Newark will be the site of a Colonial Fair from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 24. Living history interpreters, colonial demonstrations, live music, plays, dramas and colonial-era food and drink will be offered as part of the festivities, scheduled on the lawn in front of the Academy Building.

The fair is part of a larger celebration of the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge, also planned for Aug. 24. Activities will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on the original battleground, off Old Baltimore Pike between routes 896 and 72 in Glasgow. Reenactments will take place at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the encampment can be visited all day.

Originally fought on Sept. 3, 1777, the Battle of Cooch’s Bridge was the first action of the Philadelphia Campaign of 1777, preceding the Battle of the Brandywine by two weeks.

For more information on the fair or the reenactment, call 577-5044 or visit the web site at http://www.state.de.us/heritage/battle.htm.
