Catcher transfers to Delaware

Aug. 22, 2002--University of Delaware head baseball coach Jim Sherman has announced the transfer of red-shirt freshman catcher Brian Valichka from Oklahoma State University for the 2003 season.

Valichka, of Frederick, Md., will compete for position formerly held by John Schneider, the second-team All-Colonial Athletic Association catcher who was drafted in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Toronto Blue Jays in May. Schneider is currently batting .291 for the Auburn (N.Y.) Doubledays of the New York-Penn League.

"Brian is the closest thing we found to replacing Schneider behind the plate. He is a good 'catch-and-throw' guy who knows what is needed to succeed at this level," Sherman said.

Valichka was a two-time all-conference performer at Urbana High School and was the MVP of the Maryland Crown All-Star Game in 2001. He batted .440 his senior season and was a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen bases. During his junior year, Valichka hit .500 with four home runs and 30 RBI.

The University of Delaware baseball team posted its 13th consecutive winning season in 2002 with a 35-22 record, finishing fourth in its first season in the CAA.
