MBNA Career Services Center helps students 'get their foot in the door'

1:15 p.m., Nov. 6, 2002--Need help writing a winning resume? Want a few tips on preparing for a job interview? All of this can be accomplished at UD’s MBNA Career Services Center.

Located at 401 Academy St., the center is open to all students—from freshmen to seniors—interested in exploring career opportunities, developing job-seeking skills and identifying potential employers.

“I think students hear the name or come to the building and feel like it’s geared towards the College of Business and Economics. Actually, there are seven counselors for each college and major that advise students on career paths and grad school, and we also have focused job fairs for different majors. The career library has resources on various jobs and majors, and CSC provides help with finding full-time, internship and volunteer opportunities for all students,” Ketaki Abhyankar, senior student assistant, said.

Professional staff and trained student assistants are available to discuss career concerns, critique resumes and cover letters, and provide job search advice. Freshman, sophomore and junior students can take advantage of the many internships available, while seniors can get CSC help in finding a permanent full-time job upon graduation.

To do so, students must first attend a “Jobs Orientation” session, which explains how to use the CSC’s online database, e-recruiting.com (which has more than 2,000 company profiles and contacts); how to participate in the campus interview program; and how to find an internship or full-time job. The orientation lasts about 30 minutes.

CSC also hosts “Walk-in Wednesdays” from noon to 7 p.m., when students can drop by and have their resumes critiqued, review career resources and learn more about opportunities in various majors.

“I have used the CSC primarily through the e-recruiting system,” Lauren Wagner, AS 2003, said. “This online system allows you to post resumes and cover letters online and also to search through potential jobs and employers and submit electronic applications. The system also keeps a calendar of events to inform students of information sessions, classes or application deadlines. The e-recruiting system is a very valuable tool in getting my job-hunting off to an exciting start.”
