10:00 a.m., Dec. 20, 2002-- UDs Bright Ideas program is off and running with 35 innovative suggestions submitted in November, and five winners selected who will receive an extra $100 in their Jan. 15 paychecks. Novembers winners and those who win in coming months also will receive T-shirts and certificates at a reception in April, as well as recognition in UpDate and UDaily.
Weve had a wonderful response to the Bright Ideas program with ideas to improve safety and efficiency on campus and use modern technology more effectively, Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, said.
Those who teach or work in college offices or facilities are in the best position to know how to make improvements. This is an opportunity to let your ideas be known, so please keep the suggestions coming, Richie Holland, manager of Human Resources, said.
The five winners are
Nelcenia Downer, staff assistant, Institute for Public Administration, and Susan Williams, executive secretary, Office of Administrative Services, who both made similar suggestions to put more employee forms, such as tuition remission forms, on the web;
Irene Felker, administrative assistant, Dining Services, who suggested a walkway at the Perkins Garage so that pedestrians would not have to walk in the driveway;
Steven E. Hastings, professor of food and resource economics, who suggested a one-day verbal, phone-in parking permit for those who have left their permit in another car, or at home, without having to get a paper permit at Parking Services; and
Joy S. Lynam, associate director, IT-Management Information Services, who suggested that student grades on quizzes, exams and papers be posted on a Grade Reporter web site for students to access using their ID and PIN numbers instead of posting grades (and Social Security numbers) on faculty office doors.
An additional award will be given to the Office of Public Relations for the bright idea of a Bright Ideas program. Molly Chappell, art director, designed the Bright Ideas materials.
Those serving on the selection committee were Colm; Holland; Marge Hadden, administrative assistant, Professional and Noncredit Programs, representing the Salaried Staff Advisory Council; Marianne Carter, director, Employee Wellness Center, representing the Professional Advisory Council; and Norma Gaines-Hanks, assistant professor of individual and family studies, representing the faculty.
To submit a bright idea, go to the Bright Ideas web site at [www.brightideas.udel.edu] or visit the link on UDaily under Need to Know. Entries are due by the end of each month, and up to four winning ideas will be selected each month. For more information, call Holland at 831-2059.
