The University of Delaware football team will close out four weeks of spring drills this Saturday night, May 4, with the annual Blue-White Spring Game at Delaware Stadium at 7 p.m.
The spring game will be played for the second straight year under the Delaware Stadium lights. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Season ticket holders have already received their free tickes in the mail. UD students will also be admitted free with valid identification.
New Blue Hen head coach K.C. Keeler has instituted a new format for the game this season based on a point-formula in which both the offense and defense earn points for touchdowns, first downs, turnovers, etc. Approximately 70 players will take part in the game.
In past seasons, rosters were broken down into the White team, which consisted of the first team defense and second team offense and the Blue team, which included the first team offense and second team defense. This year, every offensive player will be a member of the Blue team while every defensive player will be a member of the White team.
The offensive team will score points by scoring a touchdown (6 points), an extra point (1 or 2 points), and field goals (3 points), and by earning three consecutive first downs (1 point).
The defense will earn points for scoring a touchdown (6 points), stopping the offense on three plays on an initial drive (3 points), gaining a turnover (5 points), holding the offense to a field goal after it takes possession inside the 40-yard line (4 points), holding the offense without a point after it takes possession inside the 40-yard line (6 points), and stopping a drive short of the 50-yard line line (1 point).
There will be no kickoffs and the offense will take possession at the 25-yard line. There will be fair catches called for all punts.
Among the UD players expected not to participate due to injury or ineligibility are defensive backs Mike Adams (thigh), Dave Camburn (knee), Lawrence Jones (knee), Mike Cassidy (knee), and Nick LoPiccolo (groin), linebackers Dominic Santoli and Craig Browne, defensive tackle Steve Seal (shoulder), and wide receiver Trip O&Mac226;Connell (leg).
The Blue Hens will open pre-season practice Aug. 7 in preparation for the 2002 opener Aug. 29 against 2000 NCAA I-AA national champion Georgia Southern University.
