2:15 p.m., Oct. 23, 2002-- Joseph Bergin, professor of modern history at the University of Manchester in England, will give a lecture on “Louis XIV and the French Church: The Problem of Control,” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 24, in 125 Clayton Hall.

Bergin is a leading authority on French history and the author of several books, including “Cardinal Richelieu: Power and the Pursuit of Wealth” (1985) and “The Making of the French Episcopate, 1589-1661” (1996). A reception in the lobby of Clayton Hall follows the lecture.

In addition, Bergin will present a colloquium, “Monarchy and Church in An Age of Expansion: France in the 17th Century,” at 3:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, in 203 Munroe Hall. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
