Professor and retiree represent UD Nov. 2 at Delaware Authors Day

3:05 p.m., Oct. 30, 2002--Joanne Golden, University of Delaware professor of education and reading specialist, and Clella Murray, a UD retiree and author, will be among the presenters at Delaware Authors Day, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Delaware Agriculture Museum and Village, North DuPont Highway, Dover.

Golden will explain the important components needed to help young people learn to read and love the reading experience in “Choosing Children’s Literature,” from 10 a.m.-noon. She also will discuss whether or not it matters that children read quality literature or read within the parameters of age appropriate or developmentally appropriate subject matters.

In developing language arts programs for school systems, Golden has written on several topics, including “The Value of Children’s Literature: Selecting and Reading Books with Your Child.”

Books by Golden include “The Narrative Symbol in Childhood Literature: Explorations in the Construction of Text” (1990), and “Story-making in the Classroom: The Transformation of Texts Into Works” (2000).

Murray will be among the presenters featured in “How Can I Get Published: New Ways of Working,” from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The panel will explore ways to interest publishing companies, what publishers are looking for and whether or not it is necessary to have a book in hand to get a publishing commitment.

After her retirement from UD, where she wrote and designed computer manuals for several years, Murray has spent the past five years writing three books, with more on the way.

Her books, which are published on the Internet with 1stBooks.com, of Bloomington, Ind., include “A Bite of Magic,” “A Pox on You” and “The Chinese Treasure.”

Joining Murray in the afternoon seminar are designer Christine Celano, author Charles E. (Ted) Ireland, Matthew Hershey, senior acquisitions editor with Scholastic Resources, and Nick Cerchio of Cedar Tree Books.

The free public event also features a flavored coffee bar in the morning, a silent auction of antiquarian Delaware books, free gift basket raffles and a used book sale offered by Delaware libraries. Lunch tickets will be available for $5.

The event is sponsored by the Delaware Heritage Commission, Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village, Friends of Delaware Libraries, and the Delaware Humanities Forum.
