Aug. 6, 2002--Three athletics interns will serve in the UD athletics department during the 2002-03 season.
Scott Selheimer, UD sports information director, has announced the hiring of Pete DiVito and Mark Kimmel as sports information interns, and Jerry Oravitz, director of athletics operations, has announced the appointment of former UD football standout Brett Veach as a graduate assistant for athletics operations.
Beginning this month, DiVito and Kimmel will each serve a 10-month internship in which they will assist in all areas of the sports information office, including writing press releases, feature stories, producing publications, serving as statistician and public address announcer at sporting events and updating the UD athletics website.
Veach will assist Oravitz and Shane Brey, supervisor of events, with game management, home football game operations and other day-to-day athletics operations and program needs. He will begin his position in September.
DiVito, a native of Hillsborough, N.J., earned his bachelor's degree in mass communications and public relations from Towson University in 2001. While at Towson, he worked as a manager with the Towson men's basketball program and worked as a sports reporter for the school newspaper, The Towerlight. He served as a sports information intern last year at Rutgers University, working as the primary contact for the men's and women's tennis and women's rowing programs and serving as public address announcer for several sports.
His primary responsibilities at Delaware will be working with the women's basketball, volleyball, field hockey and women's lacrosse programs.
Kimmel, a native of Hilton, N.Y., earned his bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communications from St. Bonaventure University in 2001. While at St. Bonaventure, he served as assistant sports director for student radio station, WSBU-FM, hosting a daily sports news and talk show. He served a sports information internship last year at The College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y.
His primary responsibilities at Delaware will be working with the men's and women's soccer and baseball teams.
Veach, a native of Mt. Carmel, Pa., earned his degree in physical education with honors from UD this past May. While at Delaware, he was a four-year standout for the Blue Hen football team as a running back, spread end and kick returner. He was named to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District II All-Academic team for the second straight year last November after earning second team CoSIDA national Academic All-America honors in 2000. He also was a three-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Academic team.
For his career, Veach caught 99 passes (seventh all-time at UD) for 1,470 yards (8th), and 12 touchdowns (9th). He also returned 42 punts (eighth) for 218 yards (10th) and returned 70 kickoffs (second) for a school-record 1,558 yards (22.2 avg.). His 3,382 career all-purpose yards rank ninth all-time at Delaware. He earned second team All-Atlantic 10 honors as a kick returner after the 2000 season when he led the Blue Hens to the NCAA Division I-AA semifinals.
