New art building under construction

A new art building, which will house facilities for sculpture, ceramics and printmaking, is under construction at the south end of the Hollingsworth parking lot, off North College Avenue.

The building should be completed by the end of June, according to Larry McGuire, senior project manager in UD Facilities Planning and Construction.

Currently, the disciplines are housed separately, with sculpture in the old Hollingsworth Building and separate ceramics and printmaking studios in the former Gun Shed, near Frazer Field. The new building will serve all three in a contemporary setting designed to meet the needs of each discipline.

“The new building will allow faculty to expand and improve opportunities for art students,” McGuire said.

The building, which will cost about $4.7 million, will provide the art department 35,000 square feet. That is very close in size to the combined square footage the three disciplines currently occupy, McGuire said.

Vic Costa, director of Facilities Planning and Construction, said the new building will provide the art department with well-designed studio and classroom space.

“I am very excited about the new art building,” Suzanne Austin Alchon, acting chairperson of the art department, said. “It is a state-of-the art facility with modernized safety and ventilation features. The new facility will offer wonderful, new opportunities for teaching and learning in these disciplines, and I look forward to the summer when faculty can move into the building and welcome their first classes this fall.”
