Lowe and his wife, Carol, live in Falls Church, Va. Their son, David, is a freshman at the University this year.

The Outstanding Alumni Award has been presented annually to at least one alumna or alumnus since 1952. In the fall of 1950, the president of the Alumni Association, Phillip H. Marvel of the Class of 1921, appointed the first Awards Committee. The chair of the committee, Alex Taylor, recommended the creation of an award to honor those alumni “who have done outstanding work for or pertaining to the University of Delaware or the Alumni Association.” The selection of two graduates became a tradition in 1968. Since its inception, 83 alumni have received this award.
