Full-time faculty represented by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the union that represents UD faculty, voted overwhelmingly to extend the faculty collective bargaining contract for three yearsfrom July 1, 2002, through June 30, 2005.
According to Gerry Turkel, professor of sociology and criminal justice and president of the UD chapter of the AAUP, the agreement was ratified by a vote of the 386 to accept and 53 to reject. Fifty-four votes were invalid.
Turkel said the vote, held March 20 and for the first time by mail, was the largest turnout for a contract ratification since 1990. The contract was ratified by a ratio of more than seven to one, he wrote in a message to all faculty.
The new agreement calls for salary increases of 3 percent in 2002-3, 3.5 percent in 2003-4 and 3.75 percent in 2004-4. This increase includes across-the-board increases of 2 percent in all ranks each year and merit increase pools of 1 percent the first year, 1.5 percent the second year and 1.75 percent the third year.
Other salary components of the agreement include continuation of adjusted salary differentials for 11-month faculty and adjustments to the base salaries for assistant and associate professors in the first and second years.
