Campus United Way campaign under way

Oct. 15, 2002--The University officially launched its 2002 United Way fund-raising campaign Monday, Oct. 14, with a kick-off meeting and reception for solicitors and guests in the Bob Carpenter Center.
Chuck Anderson, head of the United Way of Delaware.

“Community is really why we’re here today,” President David P. Roselle told those gathered for the kick-off event. “Our community has long been a benefactor to and a beneficiary of the many agencies supported by the United Way. We really have helped a lot of our colleagues.”

“Giving to the United Way gets you many happy returns” is the theme of the United Way of Delaware’s $30 million campaign. This year’s campus campaign goal is $175,000

More than $25,000 already has been raised toward UD’s goal, Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, announced at the kick-off event. She thanked Al Roberson, associate treasurer, who led the United Way Pacesetter program for UD administrators and senior-level employees, which ended Oct. 4 after raising more than $22,000. The Retiree Campaign, which began Oct. 1, has raised more than $3,000 so far.

Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, announced that more than $25,000 already has been raised toward UD’s $175,000 goal.

Chuck Anderson, head of the United Way of Delaware, encouraged UD’s solicitors to emphasize that United Way contributions “give agencies tools to address a wide range of community problems,” including hunger, substance abuse, poverty and child abuse.

“One of the best ways to give to the United Way is through our Community Impact Fund,” Anderson said. “It helps fund 60 local agencies that strengthen families, provide emergency assistance, support health care and improve the quality of life for seniors and people with disabilities.”

Donors have the option of directing all or a portion of their pledge or contribution to the Community Impact Fund, to targeted care, or to specific nonprofit community organizations. To make a pledge, or for more information, see your department’s United Way solicitor or go to the University’s United Way web site [www.udel.edu/unitedway].

UD United Way contributors are automatically entered in an incentive drawing slated for Nov. 11. A list of items donated for the drawing is posted on the web site as well.

“We are counting on everyone to help make this year’s United Way drive a success and to help improve life throughout our community,” Colm said.
