Journalist to speak about Middle EastLina Hashem, AS 2000 and a copy editor at the News Journal, will present a free public program on An Islamic American Journalist Looks at the Future at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in 005 Kirkbride Lecture Hall. Hashem teaches Sunday school at the Mosque of Abraham in Newark. Her father, Yahia Hashem, is president of the Islamic Society of Delaware. During her talk, she will address her triple consciousness, the challenge of being Islamic, American and a journalist, with all the competing allegiances that those roles may entail. She will discuss the horror she felt on Sept. 11, when the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon seem to have been carried out in the name of my faith, by people of my fathers ethnicity and the sadness she feels over the way the defining tragedy for an entire generation will forever be associated with people who look and worship like me. The talk and discussion afterward are open to the public For information, call 831-1975 or send e-mail to Linda Russell at [lrussell@udel.edu]. |
