Center for Black Culture offers varied fall events

Sept. 24, 2002--Fall events at the Center for Black Culture (CBC) include a parents’ open house weekend, discussions on cultural connections and relations between African-Americans and Latinos and a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Delaware Black Alumni Association.

Autumn activities begin at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, with a screening and discussion of Marlon Riggs’s film, “Black Is…Black Ain’t,” at the Center for Black Culture, 192 South College Ave. The film uses personal stories, interviews, music, history and performance to address questions such as what is black, black enough, or too black? The event is cosponsored by CBC and Each One Reach One.

Other fall CBC events include:

• An open house, from 9:30-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, as part of Freshman Parents Weekend. Visitors will be able to sample a light soul-food breakfast, meet staff members and learn about CBC programs and services.

• A special study skills workshop at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, at CBC.

• A Greek step exhibition and barbecue organized by the Black Alumni Organization from 2-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the CBC. For a complete list of Black Alumni Organization homecoming events, visit [http://www.udel.edu/alumni/alum/bao.html].

• “Afro-Latino Connections: From Be Bop to Hip Hop,” a campus dialog on race with author, lawyer and professor David Lamb at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 16, in 006 Kirkbride Hall. Author of “Do Platanos Go Wit’ Collard Greens?,” Lamb will discuss race and identity, sexual stereotypes, cultural creation and political cooperation versus political conflict. The event is cosponsored by CBC and the Hispanic and Latin American Concerns Office.
