Fund raising 5K scheduled Dec. 2The Scott Mackler 5K Run/Walk to benefit the ALS Association, which conducts research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease, will be held at noon Sunday, Dec. 2. The event, which is sponsored by the Temple Beth El Mens Club, will begin and end at the temple at 301 Possum Park Rd. This years race honors Mackler, a Newark resident and a physician and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, who has the disease and has begun an assistive technology programs for persons with ALS. He is the husband of Lynn Mackler, physical therapy. The pre-registration fee is $15 ($18 the day of the race). Each registered runner will receive a T-shirt, and refreshments will be served after the race. Awards will be presented in different age groups and to the top male and female walkers and runners. Last year, almost 300 runners and walkers participated. Teams from one person to 50 are encouraged to register, and it is suggested each participant secure pledges totaling $100.
