UD Admissions Office opens record 20,000th application

YoUDee helps Acting Provost Dan Rich open the 20,000th application

UD Acting Provost Daniel Rich, YoUDee and a tight-knit group of staff members in the admissions office gathered at a luncheon Monday, Feb. 25, to celebrate the opening of mail. Not just any mail, but the University record 20,000th application for undergraduate admission.

For the past two years, UD has shattered institutional records for the number of students who have applied for undergraduate admission. In 2001, a total of 18,209 high school seniors applied for admission. That was down slightly from the 18,447 in 2000 but well above the mark of 14,338 in 1999. More than 15,000 applications were received in both 1997 and 1998.

This year, for the first time, the number reached 20,000-–and it is still growing. The application that broke the mark was mailed by a young woman who is a senior at Wilmington’s Concord High School. UD also accepts a large number of admissions applications on-line.

“This is certainly an indication of the quality of the University and the recognition of that quality among prospective students,” Rich said of the record number of applications.

Rich added that having a greater number of applicants every year enables the University to be more selective in its admissions, ensuring that the best and brightest students begin their college careers in Newark. “That is the real benefit,” he said.

Lawrence Griffith, director of undergraduate admissions, said the opening of the 20,000th envelope signifies an extraordinary achievement made possible by the hard work of the admissions staff.

“The University’s success reflects their success,’ he said.
