Now in its 22nd season, UD's Performing Arts Series once again will present a range of musical, dance and theatrical performances for students, faculty and the community.
Exposing audiences to diverse cultural and ethnic traditions through the arts, the series also features workshops, master classes and residency clinics for students.
The 1999-2000 season:
- Relache, a contemporary music ensemble, emphasizes the work of innovative composers and new musical works. Two members of the ensemble are UD faculty members-Harvey Price (percussion) and Lloyd Shorter (oboe and English horn). Friday, Sept. 17
- Ahn Trio, a young, up-and coming classical chamber music ensemble, is composed of three sisters-a violinist, pianist and cellist. The trio offers energetic and imaginative interpretations of classical music and also incorporates some modern works into their performances. Saturday, Nov. 13
- The world famous Harlem Gospel Choir will present a holiday concert, also featuring the UD Gospel choir. Sunday, Dec. 5.
- Pianist Tom Palmer and vocalist Ellen Lebowitz, UD alumni, combine with a band of local artists to perform an array of jazz music. Saturday, Jan. 22
- Ensemble Galilei performs on fiddle, Celtic harp, recorders, pennywhistle, oboe, viola da gamba and percussion. Classically and folk-trained musicians, the ensemble presents ancient music, including Baroque interpretations of 18th-century Irish airs, reels and jigs, as well as Welsh melodies, Galician waltzes and Breton dance tunes. Saturday, Feb. 19
- The Caribbean Dance Company performs Calypso-style folk dances embodying the beauty, color and joy that are the essence of Caribbean life. Its performances illustrate the rich heritage of folk dance from throughout the West Indies. Saturday, March 11
- Pianist Leon Bates performs "Gershwin by Request," a special feature with soprano Sebronette Barnes and bass baritone Cedric Cannon. The recital performance includes classical, pop and jazz. Saturday, April 15
A Family Performing Arts Series also will be presented, with opportunities for children to learn and experience the performing arts.
Family Series:
- The classic tale of Beauty and the Beast will be performed by the American Family Theatre. Saturday, Oct. 9
- The Adventures of Aladdin will be presented by the American Family Theatre. Sunday, Jan. 23
- The Emmy Award-winning
educational cartoon series, School House Rock, bursts into life on stage through song, dance and theatre. The performance will feature favorite songs such as "Conjunction Junction," "The Preamble," "I'm Just a Bill," "My Hero," "Zero" and "Interjections." Tuesday, March 21
* Follow Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion down the yellow brick road in this American Family Theatre performance of The Wizard of Oz. The musical features award-winning lighting and special effects. Sunday, May 7?
* Theatreworks USA presents Charlotte's Web, the story of Wilbur the pig and the miraculous spider, Charlotte, in E.B. White's ever-popular tale of bravery, selfless love and the true meaning of friendship. Sunday, June 4
