The University of Delaware-based Delaware Mentoring Council (DMC) has announced the availability of a total of $25,000 in grants from the Delaware Department of Education for the establishment or support of structured community mentoring/tutoring programs less than one-year old that serve academically and socially at-risk children and youth in Delaware. Each eligible agency can be awarded up to $9,000.

The Community Mentoring/Tutoring Program request for proposal (RFP) is now available online at [www.delawarementoring.org]. The RFP lists eligibility requirements and submission instructions.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 2. Those unable to access the RFP online can call (302) 831-0520, or send e-mail to [delawarementoring@udel.edu]. DMC will administer the grants.

“Last year, DMC's efforts to make more funds available to support mentoring/tutoring programs in community settings resulted in the Delaware Department of Education providing $50,000 for fiscal year 2007,” Michelle Knights, DMC director, said. “The first $25,000 was recently awarded to established mentoring/tutoring programs. The remaining $25,000 will be awarded to start new community mentoring or tutoring programs or to support those less than one year old. The goal of the Delaware Mentoring Council is to provide a mentor for every child who needs one. We believe that this additional support, in the form of grant monies, is an important step in reaching that goal.”

DMC is a coalition of mentor programs, local corporations and businesses, government agencies and organizations committed to providing mentoring to youth in need throughout the state. DMC was established by executive order of the governor and is housed within UD's College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy.
