Members of the UD community will receive access to the first college-only service that blends social networking features with a massive music, movie and television library. For an additional fee, thousands of Hollywood movies and hit TV shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives are also available on Ruckus. Through Ruckus, students at Delaware can legally share music, movies and television; create playlists; send personal media recommendations to friends and neighbors; browse classmates’ profiles and media libraries and meet new friends. Students can build their personal music libraries from Ruckus’ collection of more than 1.5 million high-quality, virus-free songs. Ruckus eliminates copyright infringement thanks to its licensing agreements with the top multimedia distributors nationwide. “The University of Delaware has long been recognized as a leader both for its use of technology and for its emphasis on responsible computing practices. Through this alternative to illegal file-sharing, our students enjoy an innovative and legal way to download and share their music, movies and television with friends and classmates,” said Susan Foster, vice president for information technologies at The University of Delaware. “We’re happy to be able to provide our student body free access to the Ruckus music service.” "While incorporating technology into all aspects of campus life, the University of Delaware has provided a superior network, providing students ready access to the Internet through wired classrooms and residence halls, as well as numerous wireless areas around the campus," UD President David Roselle said. "At the same time, UD has been a leader in educational programs aimed at impressing upon the campus community the need for fair use of entertainment available on the web. This agreement with Ruckus builds on that effort by providing new access to a wealth of entertainment options for our community." Delaware was selected to participate in Ruckus’ free on campus music service offering based on the school’s robust networking infrastructure, commitment to supporting legal, digital media services through on-campus marketing, and student demand for the Ruckus service. “We’re excited to have attracted such an acclaimed partner as the University of Delaware,” said Brad Vaughn, VP of Campus Sales at Ruckus. “Delaware is known for providing cutting-edge technology to its unique and diverse student body and Ruckus is happy to foster that environment by providing students with a digital entertainment network and a safe and legal solution to file-sharing.” Delaware students can begin using the service immediately.
