The whereabouts of the chief conspirator behind the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, and the status of the efforts to bring him to justice are among the topics discussed during “Forgotten, But Not Gone: Update on Terrorism and the Hunt for bin Laden,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 18, in Mitchell Hall, The Green, on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus. The event, part of UD’s Global Community Initiative lecture series, is free and open to the public.

The discussion, featuring journalist Peter Bergen, one of the few Americans who actually met bin Laden before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and former congressman Lee Hamilton, vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission, will be moderated by Ralph Begleiter, Rosenberg Professor of Communication and Distinguished Journalist in Residence.

Besides discussing the reasons why bin Laden remains at large despite the intense military and intelligence efforts to corner him, the panel will examine related issues such as how bin Laden escaped, where is he now and what his motives are. Other discussion topics will include identifying bin Laden’s allies and whether or not his terrorist network is stronger or weaker than it was three years ago.

Organized by Beglieter, the series is designed to survey potential threats to the United States and explore the complex framework of global relations. The event is cosponsored by the University of Delaware and the Center for International Studies.
