“Why U.S.?,” a film that takes an insightful look at the 9/11 tragedy and what makes the U.S. a target, will be shown at the University of Delaware at 5:30 p.m., Monday, March 17. A discussion with the producer and director will follow. The film and discussion, free and open to the public, will take place in 120 Smith Hall, Amstel and South College Avenues, Newark.

The 75-minute documentary details worldwide sentiments about the U.S. since 9/11 and the chilling growth of extremism and anti-Americanism in the world today. It includes interviews and commentary from former U.S. government officials, former foreign ministers, journalists, academics and others, such as Amr Moussa, secretary general of the Arab league.

The documentary was produced by Cody Shearer, directed by Daniel Lindsay, written and edited by Jay Gowen, with music by Hal Cragin.

Shearer has been a Washington, D.C., based journalist for the past 30 years and is the founder of the non-profit organization, Institution for International Mediation and Conflict Resolution. He also has worked as a producer for the news divisions at NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS and CNN. As a journalist, he has covered conflicts in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa and Central America.

Twenty-four year old Lindsay spent the last year traveling the globe with Shearer, directing “Why U.S.?” He received a degree in marketing from the University of Missouri, while also earning credit from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema. At Missouri, he received highest honors for writing and directing in the University’s annual competition. “Why U.S.?” marks his first venture into directing documentary films.

The film screening and discussion are sponsored by the UD Department of Political Science and International Relations. For more information, call (302) 831-2355.
