Felipe Luciano

Reporter, poet and activist Felipe Luciano will speak about his commitment to Latino ethnic pride at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, at the University of Delaware. His talk, free and open to the public, will be held in Multipurpose Room A of the Trabant University Center, Main Street and South College Avenue, Newark.

Born and raised in New York City, Luciano strikes the cutting edge as founder and chairman of the Young Lords Party. Goal-oriented and committed to the fight for freedom for all who are oppressed, the party focuses on the importance of community empowerment, ethnic pride and civil rights as crucial aspects in changing the color and complexion of politics, society and culture.

With expertise in both media and community activism, Luciano has been called the man for the millennium with acclaimed success in radio, television, journalism, stage productions, music and poetry.
The recipient of two Emmys, an ACE and Silurian award, his experience with Spanish and African-American entertainment venues led to his position as the first Puerto Rican news anchor for WNBC and to a film about the Young Lords currently in development by HBO.

As one of the Original Last Poets, the rappers of the civil rights era, Luciano has created changing trends and tastes in the entertainment industry and gained extensive knowledge on the inner workings of the business mainstream.

UD’s “Evening with Felipe Luciano” is sponsored by UD’s Center for Black Culture. For more information, call (302) 831-2991.
