UD skater takes gold in the junior nationals

Eleven-year old Christine Zukowski, Newark, who trains at the University of Delaware, took first place in the juvenile girls’ competition in the 2001 U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships held in Westminster, Colo., Dec. 12-16.

Zukowski and her family moved from New Jersey to Newark, Del. in 1998 so she could train at UD. She began skating when she was 5-years old after watching the 1994 Olympics.

Also emerging top winners in the junior national competition were Anna Peng, 12, Wilmington, silver medalist in intermediate ladies and Ashley Elliott, 14, Claymont, and partner Paul Hurych, 15, Aston, Pa., who won silver medals in intermediate dance.

Other UD skaters who placed in the junior nationals include: Caitlin and Matthew Dail, 6th place in intermediate dance; Kimberly Meissner, 16th place in intermediate ladies; and Marion (Michelle) Pennington and Zachary Varraux, 11th place in juvenile dance.

The public can see these skaters perform during UD’s National Send-Off Figure Skating Exhibition, at 5 p.m., on Sunday, January 7, in the Rust Ice Arena on Route 896 in Newark. Tickets, now on sale at UD box offices, are $12 for adults, $10 for UD faculty and staff, $9 for groups and senior citizens and $7 for UD students and children.
