Casting memories

Sculptor Franklin Creech of North Carolina produced this plaster prototype of the late Dave Nelson, former head foodball coach, athletic director and dean of the College of Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation, prior to casting the bust in bronze. The official unveiling of the Nelson sculpture will be Saturday, Oct. 11, during a half-time ceremony at the UD-University of Richmond game. Mr. Nelson, who was head football coach from 1951-65, led the University to three Mid-Atlantic Conference titles and three Lambert Cup titles during his tenure. Recognized as the foremost authority on college football rules in the country, Mr. Nelson was director of athletics until 1984 and dean of the then College of Physical Education. He died in 1991. Creech also produced a bronze bust of former UD head football coach Bill Murray, which was unveiled last year. The busts will be located in the southwest corner of Delaware Stadium.
