Kirch Fund established to support German studies

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the German residence hall Deutsches Haus, friends, alumni and supporters of German studies are invited to make contributions to the recently established Max S. Kirch Fund.

Mr. Kirch, who was the inspiration behind the creation of this living-learning center for students of German, was professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University from 1953 to 1984 and chaired the department from 1963 to 1971. Das Deutsches Haus enables UD students to experience a linguistic and cultural environment in German

A linguist, Mr. Kirch taught courses in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swahili, as well as linguistics and methods of teaching foreign languages.

Established by a $10,000 gift from Mr. Kirch's family, the memorial fund will support Das Deutsches Haus programs, the Delta Phi Alpha German honor society award ceremony and study-abroad scholarships to Germany.

To make contributions to the fund, send a check made payable to the University of Delaware with the notation "Kirch Memorial Fund" to the Office of University Development, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.
