On The Mall: Meet the Class of 2000

     The Class of 2000, the last of this century, has arrived on
campus and is diverse, large and brainy. The most ethnically
diverse class in the history of the University, it also is the
largest freshman class since 1988 with members who rank among the
smartest ever enrolled. The 3,377 freshmen and 627 transfer
students include 20 sets of twins and one set of triplets (two
boys and a girl).

Also included are
     * 525 African Americans, Asians, Hispanics or Native
Americans;
     * 114 National Merit, Achievement and Hispanic Scholars
finalists, semifinalists and commended students;
     * 73 valedictorians and salutatorians;
     * 164 students with 4.0 high school grade point averages;
     * 378 students with average SAT scores of 1330, enrolled in
the University Honors Program;
     * 49 percent of students interested in community volunteer
work and service;
     * 26 percent who worked on their high school newspapers;
     * 20 percent interested in music;
     * 1,108 Delawareans;
     * 723 New Jerseyites;
     * 609 Pennsylvanians;
     * 424 New Yorkers;
     * 252 Marylanders;
     * 35 international students from 22 foreign countries;
     * 91 Michaels;
     * 105 Jennifers;
     * 561 freshmen with one-of-a-kind first names -for example,
one Abraham and one Zoe;
     * 16 Smiths;
     * 15 Millers;
     * one 72-year-old; and
     * one 15-year-old.
