University of Delaware Office of Public Relations The Messenger Vol. 5, No. 1/1995 Recognition: A Special Report Legacy Society Honors Donors of Planned Gifts Last year, the University of Delaware announced the creation of the Legacy Society, formed to recognize and honor the commitment of those who have provided for the future support of the University under their estate or financial plans- regardless of the size of the gift. "Alumni and friends who provide for the University in this way have made a truly remarkable commitment to the future strength of our University and to the long tradition of excellence so much a part of the University," according to Paula M. Tilmon, director of trusts and estates. Bequests from alumni and friends who include the University in their wills provide valuable support for students and faculty in a wide variety of programs. Some bequests also provide unrestricted support, allowing the University to address its most pressing needs. Planned gifts may support a scholarship, a professorship or other program, Tilmon points out. For example, faculty member Richard W. Garvine was named the Maxwell P. and Mildred H. Harrington Professor of Marine Studies, thanks to a substantial bequest. The Harringtons, both Delaware natives, had a special love for the coast. As a 1950 Delaware graduate and civil engineer, Mr. Harrington also worked in marine sciences for several years.
