1994-95 Sports Recap

FALL SPORTS

FOOTBALL (7-3-1 overall, 5-3 in Yankee Conference, 2nd place)
     Head coach: Harold R. "Tubby" Raymond

     Recap: Blue Hens narrowly missed out on their fourth straight
     trip to the NCAA I-AA playoffs despite going unbeaten in the
     final six games of the season. Delaware ranked second in the
     nation in rushing behind the play of All-American fullback Daryl
     Brown, who set 14 school records and became the Yankee
     Conference's all-time leading rusher with 4,587 career yards.
     Offensive guard Shannon Trostle also earned All-American honors.

MEN'S SOCCER (1-17, 0-7 North Atlantic Conference,  8th place)
     Head coach: Marc Samonisky

     Recap: The Hens suffered through a disappointing 1-17 season,
     losing four games by one goal but defeating rival Temple
     University 4-2. Senior defender Andy Bullard earned Delaware's
     Eastern College Athletic Conference Medal of Merit with a grade
     point average of 3.8.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (5-3, 5th at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Jim Fischer

     Recap: A young Blue Hen team had a solid season with a winning
     dual meet slate and a fifth-place finish at the North Atlantic
     Conference championships at Maine. Academic All-American Travis
     Adams placed seventh and John Brannon was eighth at the NAC meet
     to earn all-conference honors.

FIELD HOCKEY (14-6, 5-1 NAC, regular season champions)
     Head coach: Carol Miller

     Recap: Blue Hens won their first-ever NAC regular season title
     behind NAC Coach of the Year Carol Miller. Team jumped out to a 7-
     0 start and was nationally ranked all season, rising as high as
     No. 10 in September. Senior Brenda Lear earned second-team All-
     American honors and goalkeeper Kim Lockbaum, one of the nation's
     leaders in save percentage, earned first-team All-Mid Atlantic
     Region notice.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (16-2-1, 3-1 NAC, 2nd place)
     Head coach: Scott Grzenda

     Recap: The Blue Hens set a school record for wins and advanced to
     NAC final before falling to nationally ranked Hartford under
     direction of NAC Coach of the Year Scott Grzenda. The Hens had a
     12-game unbeaten streak at mid-season thanks to play of all-
     region performers Kristy Hendrickson, who set eight school
     scoring records, and Beth Hatt.

VOLLEYBALL (33-12, 5-0 NAC, NAC champions)
     Head coach: Barbara Viera

     Recap: Blue Hens, led by NAC Coach of the Year Barbara Viera, won
     the NAC title for the second time in three seasons and competed
     at the National Invitational Volleyball Championships in Kansas
     City, Mo. Senior Kathy Shaw was named NAC Player of the Year and
     ranked sixth nationally in digs per game. Setter Nikki Brassell
     was All-NAC while Emily Rome was the NAC Tournament Most Valuable
     Player.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY (6-1, 2nd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Susan McGrath-Powell

     Recap: Delaware enjoyed its best ever NAC championship finish
     behind NAC Coach of the Year Sue McGrath-Powell. The Hens
     received an outstanding performance from Tara Pointin, who led
     her team in all but one race and was fifth at the NAC meet. Chris
     Rolleri was sixth at NACs while Katie Guarracino was seventh.

WOMEN'S TENNIS (9-3, 2nd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Laura LeRoy

     Recap: Singles players Rebecca Fearins, Alison Ashurst and Lori
     McCarthy and the doubles team of Megan Zusi and Jane Kratz all
     finished as runners-up at the NAC championships at Vermont to
     lead the Hens to a best-ever, second-place finish. Head coach
     Laura LeRoy was named NAC Coach of the Year.


WINTER SPORTS

MEN'S BASKETBALL (12-15, 7-9 NAC, 7th place)
     Head coach: Steve Steinwedel

     Recap: Delaware suffered its first losing season in eight years
     but 10 of the losses were decided by six or less points. UD
     defeated NCAA Sweet 16 participant Weber State at the UC-Santa
     Barbara tournament. Four-year starter Brian Pearl finished his
     career with 14 school records and ranked No. 3 all-time in
     scoring.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK (9-4, 3rd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Jim Fischer

     Recap: Delaware placed third at the NAC championships in Boston
     and enjoyed its 21st straight winning dual meet season. Larry
     McSeed (55-meter hurdles) and Pat Williams (55 meters) each won
     NAC titles and Brian D'Amico (35-lb. weight throw), Mo Bracy (400
     meters) and Mike Sye (55-meter hurdles) each finished second.

MEN'S SWIMMING (6-5, 3rd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: John Hayman

     Recap: The Blue Hens received solid performances at the NAC
     championships at Maine and placed third overall. Diver Dave Caffo
     won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events; Mike Riccitelli was
     runner-up in both the 1,650 freestyle and 500 freestyle; and Rob
     Krouse was second in the 200 butterfly. Josh Smith set three
     school records during the year.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (12-15, 5-10 NAC, 7th place)
     Head coach: Joyce Perry

     Recap: The UD women had an identical record to the Blue Hen men,
     finishing 12-15 overall and placing seventh in the NAC. Senior
     forward Colleen McNamara, a three-time All-NAC selection,
     collected 14 school records for her career, leaving Delaware as
     the all-time leading scorer (1,560), rebounder (1,063) and shot
     blocker (197). Freshman Anette Percy, a native of Sweden, earned
     NAC All-Rookie honors.

WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD (5-7, 4th at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Susan McGrath-Powell

     Recap: The Blue Hen women placed fourth at the NAC championships
     at Boston University led by second-place finishers Sheryl Hall
     (high jump) and Tara Pointin (5,000 meters). Chris Rolleri and
     Pointin competed at the ECAC championships and finished 17th and
     23rd, respectively, in the 5,000 meters.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING (8-3, 3rd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: John Hayman

     Recap: The Delaware women had another successful year, placing
     third at the NAC championships at Maine and 10th at the ECAC
     championships at Buffalo. The Hens were led by diver Beth Ian and
     freestyler Nancy Davis. Davis captured the NAC 500 and 1,650
     freestyle events and set five school records. Ian won the NAC 1-
     and 3-meter diving events.


SPRING SPORTS

BASEBALL: (40-10, 19-3 NAC, regular season champions)
     Head coach: Bob Hannah

     Recap: Backed by the nation's top pitching staff and another
     solid group of hitters, the UD baseball team won a school-record,
     40 regular season games, and captured the NAC regular season
     title. The Hens went on to the NAC tournament title May 12-15.
     Adam Lamanteer (9-1, 1.61 ERA), Jamie Wilson (8-0, 1.25) and Curt
     Schnur (9-3, 1.16) formed a staff that leads the nation in earned
     run average at 2.18. Third baseman Cliff Brumbaugh (.428, 45 RBI)
     and 1B Dan Hammer (.335, 8 HR) led the offense.

MEN'S LACROSSE: (6-9, 4-1 NAC, 2nd place)
     Head coach: Bob Shillinglaw

     Recap: Despite playing one of the nation's toughest schedules
     with a young team and a rash of injuries, the UD men laxers came
     away with a 6-9 mark and placed second in the NAC. Senior All-
     American Anthony DiMarzo was the nation's No. 3 leading scorer
     and set UD records for points in a season (78) and career (251)
     and assists in a career (153). Brad Glowaki scored a team-high 40
     goals.

MEN'S TENNIS: (15-3, 4th at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Laura LeRoy

     Recap: The UD men netters posted a 15-3 record, the second
     highest win total in school history, and placed fourth at the NAC
     tournament at Vermont. Singles players Felix Nacson (16-2) and
     Subash Parameswaran (14-0) each earned All-NAC honors and led a
     singles lineup that won 86 percent of its matches. Dave Paul and
     Kyle Binnington teamed to post a record of 15-1 at the No. 1
     doubles position.

MEN'S GOLF: (1-0, 3rd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Jim Kent

     Recap: Delaware placed third at the NAC championships at Hebron,
     Conn., the team's 11th straight, top-three finish in conference
     play, and placed 14th at the NCAA District II Tournament. Ralph
     Viola and Todd Milligan tied for fourth at the NAC tournament.
     Viola led the Hens with a 78.73 stroke average, while Milligan
     carded a 79.18 average and earned All-NAC honors for the third
     straight year.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: (0-0, 3rd at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Jim Fischer

     Recap: The UD men tracksters came ever so close to their third
     straight NAC team title but placed third when they were
     disqualified in the final relay of the day at Northeastern
     University. Brian D'Amico won his third career NAC discus title
     at the meet, while Larry McSeed won the 110-meter high hurdles
     and Academic All-American Travis Adams captured the 10,000
     meters. Nick McIntosh was second in the 400 meter dash.

SOFTBALL: (15-31-1, 1-9-1 NAC, 7th place)
     Head coach: B.J. Ferguson

     Recap: The UD softball team had a disappointing season, posting a
     record of 15-31-1 that included nine losses by one run. Senior
     outfielder/ shortstop Lisa Myers had a remarkable season, batting
     .395 with 10 doubles and 22 stolen bases. She earned second-team,
     All-NAC honors and broke eight UD records, including hits in a
     season (62) and career (164). Kristen Kayatta hit .315 with 17
     RBI and two home runs.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE:  (9-10, 3-4 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), 2nd
place)
     Head coach: Denise Wescott

     Recap: The UD women laxers, ranked 13th or higher throughout the
     year, peaked late and almost pulled off a big upset before losing
     to Old Dominion in the CAA championship game. Sue Daddona ranked
     third in the nation in scoring (56g, 16a) and went over 100 goals
     for her career. Daddona, Kelly Frey and Melissa Hefner earned
     first-team, All-South Region honors.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: (0-0, 4th at NAC championships)
     Head coach: Susan McGrath-Powell

     Recap: The Blue Hen women's track and field team placed fourth at
     the NAC outdoor championships at Northeastern University for the
     third straight season. Tara Pointin captured the 10,000-meter run
     and placed second in the 3,000 meters, while Kristen Singleton
     (200 meters) and Sheryl Hall (high jump) each placed second.
     Chris Delli Paoli, who set a UD record in the hammer throw
     earlier in the year, was third in that event.
