Messenger - Vol. 3, No. 3, Page 5 Spring 1994 Works of Progress Parking garage first step to new student center The groundbreaking this June for a 600-car parking garage is the first step toward the University's new $27 million student center. The garage is expected to be completed by April 1995. Construction work on the new student center, set to begin in the fall of 1994, will be completed in the spring of 1996. The new student center and its parking garage will be located in an area bounded by West Main Street, West Delaware and South College avenues. The center will include a two-story atrium walkway, and the original portion of Daugherty Hall, formerly a 19th-century church, will be restored and incorporated into the center as a lounge and special event space. The new center will include a food court, theatre, lounges, an annex to the bookstore, quick copy and mail services, a multipurpose room and other meeting rooms and offices. Architects are Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates of Philadelphia, whose campus projects include The Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, Memorial Hall at Harvard University, the faculty club at Pennsylvania State University and numerous buildings at Princeton University. Funding for the project will be provided by a bond issue, gifts and institutional funds. Bonds will be repaid through a combination of student center fees and revenues from Dining Services, parking and the Bookstore.
