Messenger - Vol. 3, No. 2, Page 7 Winter 1994 Colburn campaign A $22 million addition and renovation to Allan P. Colburn Laboratory, which began this spring, is expected to be completed by 1996. Located on Academy Street in Newark, Colburn Laboratory is home to the Department of Chemical Engineering. The addition, which will wrap around both the south and east sides of the existing structure, will add approximately 40,000 square feet, including 23,000 square feet of new laboratory space. The existing structure was built in 1965. State funding for the project will total $15 million, with the remaining $7 million to be raised privately by the University through gifts and grants from corporations, foundations, alumni and friends. Approximately $3.8 million has already been pledged in gifts from such companies as DuPont, Hercules, Mobil, Gore, Air Products and Merck. Under the leadership of Morton Collins, Delaware '58, of Princeton, N.J., a national fund-raising campaign will seek to raise the remaining $3.2 million. The expansion and remodeling of Colburn Laboratory will enable faculty and students to work with state-of-the-art equipment, further enhancing the quality of teaching and research that has allowed the Department of Chemical Engineering to rank as sixth best in the world.
