Summer 1993
Stroke!

The Delaware crew has been making waves since it was founded in 1991.
The women's novice eight placed first and the men's varsity eight placed
second at the B level of competition in the 1992 Dad Vail Regatta in
Philadelphia. At this year's Dad Vail, the men's freshman-novice
lightweight eight placed first, and both the men's and the women's
freshman-novice eight placed fifth. And, at the La Salle Regatta in April,
the Delaware crew finished first in five categories and second in another.
Volunteer coach Chuck Crawford, who took two U.S. men's four-oared crews to
silver medals in the last Pan American Games, says the Delaware teams "are
knocking on the door of some top-level competitors." Delaware's club has
swelled to 70 undergraduates, and Crawford expects an additional 30 members
in the fall. The squad practices on the Christina and Brandywine rivers in
Wilmington, Del., six days a week in the fall and spring semesters and
trains with weights or runs three days a week year-round.
