New university secretary appointed

     Pierre D. Hayward of Greenville, former senior vice president and
corporate affairs division manager at Delaware Trust Co. in Wilmington, has
been named secretary of the University of Delaware.
     In his new position, Hayward is responsible for providing overall
support to the Board of Trustees, serving as staff officer to the board and
the president.
     Hayward succeeds G. Arno Loessner, Delaware '64, '70M, who has
requested to return to the professional staff of the College of Urban
Affairs and Public Policy.
     Hayward joined the staff at Delaware Trust in 1984, after serving for
10 years as executive assistant to Delaware's U.S. Sen. William V. Roth. At
the bank, he had responsibility for corporate administration and public
relations; external communications, including advertising; office systems;
and facilities management.
     A 1970 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., Hayward holds a
bachelor's degree in history. He is an Air Force veteran, serving in
Vietnam from 1971-72.
     In the community, Hayward serves on the boards of the Delaware State
Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Bankers Association, the Grand Opera
House, Peninsula United Methodist Homes, on the residence committee board
of Eleutherian Mills (Hagley), on the executive committee of Tower Hill
School's Alumni Council and on the advisory board of the University of
Delaware's Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Program.
     He is treasurer and a member of the executive committee of the World
Affairs Council; is a trustee of the Wilmington Medical Center and Goldey
Beacom College; is past president of the Delaware chapter of the American
Heart Association; and is New Castle County finance co-chairperson of the
Republican State Committee.
