Messenger - Vol. 2, No. 2, Page 14 Winter 1993 On Campus Scoreboard; Fall Athletic Round-up Volleyball The 1992 Blue Hen spikers enjoyed one of the finest seasons in school history, winning the NAC title and competing in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in Kansas City. Head coach Barb Viera, who won her 500th career match at Delaware early in the season, led the team to a record of 28-18. The Hens set a school record with 14 straight wins late in the season and downed Drexel for the league title. Delaware earned several post-season honors. Viera was named NAC Coach of the Year, Phoebe Folke was named first team All-NAC and Jill Graber and MVP Kathy Shaw were both named to the All-Tournament team. Field hockey Mary Beth Holder's 1992 women's field hockey team fared better in its second year in the North Atlantic Conference and just missed qualifying for the four-team playoffs. The squad posted an overall record of 6-12 and went a respectable 3-3 in league play in one of the nation's most competitive conferences. Seven of the 12 losses were by one goal or less. Senior co-captain Kelly Hollinger led the team offensively with a team-high six goals, including five in conference play, while sophomore Brenda Lear earned All-NAC honors at midfield. Senior co-captain Cassie Herr paced the defense. Lisa Wood and freshman Kim Lockbaum shared the goal-keeping duties. Men's soccer Head coach Loren Kline's youthful squad suffered through a tough 2-16 season (0-7 NAC) in 1992, but the future looks bright, with a wealth of talented newcomers. The Blue Hens lacked some much-needed scoring punch, scoring just 18 goals on the season. Sophomore Mike Nash led the Blue Hen booters with nine goals, while fellow sophomore Andy Bullard added five scores. In all, 14 players who started one or more games are due back in 1993, as well as captain Cheyney Meadows, who missed the entire season with a knee injury. Women's soccer Despite suffering through a season of frustration, head coach Scott Grzenda returns 17 players who saw action this season, along with a cast of recruits. A good start will be important in '93, as the Hens began the season 0-4 and lost six of their first seven contests. Like the men's team, the Hens lacked some offensive firepower, scoring just 13 goals on the season. Sophomore Kristy Hendrickson led with seven points, coming from two goals and three assists. Senior Jenna Blackmon posted three goals, and earned NAC Player of the Week on Sept. 29. Junior Sheena Hunter recorded 51 saves and a 1.36 GAA, along with three shutouts. Women's tennis The Blue Hens made impressive strides in head coach Laura LeRoy's first season, posting an 8-6 record and a fourth place at the NAC championships. It was the most wins recorded by a Delaware team since 1988. The Hens' success should continue as only two players will graduate from the 1992 squad. Freshman Kate Brune posted a 10-3 record in dual matches and finished third at the NAC championships at the Flight No. 1 singles. Brune, playing at the No. 3 spot most of the season, posted seven straight wins in dual matches. Her talent will be counted on for the 1993 squad. The doubles team of Julia Kratzer and Mary Wolfenden posted 7-6 in dual matches and took a third-place finish, playing Flight No. 1 doubles at the NAC championships. The duo has played together for three years, earning a career record of 15-11. Men's cross country The Blue Hen runners had a fine season, despite the fourth-place finish in the NAC championships held at New Hampshire. Delaware finished the year with a 6-3 record in dual meets. Head coach Jim Fischer is optimistic for next year's success as the squad will lose only two of its top runners to graduation. Junior captain Eric Albright was top runner, posting five first-place finishes this year. Albright was the Hens' top finisher in all the races. Juniors Bryan Denbrock and Bret Mower were consistently the No. 2 and 3 finishers for Delaware. Women's cross country Recording a solid season, the women's cross country team tallied a 5-2 record in dual competition and came through with a third-place finish in the NAC championships. Senior co-captains Jill Riblett and Marnie Guinta both ran well for the 1992 campaign. Guinta earned NAC honors for her fifth-place finish at the championships. She led the Hens in four of the races and had two second place finishes overall. Riblett won one race and was the No. 1 runner for the Hens in two of the races. The No. 3 runner for the Hens, Kara Priggon, will step up to take the place of Riblett and Guinta next year. -Scott Selheimer
